Campendonk Masterpiece
This museum-worthy oil is one of Campendonk’s finest and most impressive works. It is on an old canvas that is signed on the lower right and dated 1947. It is in good condition and presented in what is likely the original frame. Attached to the back of the painting is a metal plaque suggesting that it is one of the Campendonks known to have been on display at the Caracas Museum of Modern Art. There is a Marlborough Fine Art certificate verso dated 1948 which also suggests its authenticity as the gallery was known to represent the artist. This is one of the paintings that the owner whose estate is being liquidated was known to have purchased in order to assist families attempting to flee from Venezuela’s Chavez government. There is a recent Certificate of Authenticity by John Fliss and Associates that was commissioned by the executor of the consigning estate. Information about Campendonk and his work can be found on Wikipedia and in Gisela Geiger’s “Heinrich Campendonk. The Great Master of Art.”
